Be an Ambassador

No matter your role in a Board, you need to be an ambassador for your organisation. An ambassador is someone who knows what the organisation is all about, is committed to its values and ethos, and is always promoting and nurturing the organisation’s existence. Ambassadors should be able to speak up, passionately, clearly and with conviction about the organisation.

Imagine you have met someone in the supermarket and you are explaining your work. If the person asks you “why does your organisation exist?” Can you answer in a way that is brief but powerful? Can you speak to what the organisation does and create an opportunity for the person you are speaking to to want to know more?

Some people call this the “elevator pitch” – a 30 second spiel that we know off by heart for times like these. It should capture the brand and heart of the organisation. To develop one you need to know and understand:

The values and ethos that guide your organisation.
The Constitution and/or Rules by which the organisation operates.
The Objects of the association - why it exists, what problem it aims to solve or service it provides.

Awareness is fine, but advocacy will take your business to the next level.

A Moment of Reflection...

How well do you know the values, constitution and objects of your organisation? Have a go at writing a 3-5 sentence elevator pitch.

Share your elevator pitch in the comments at the bottom of this page and see what others have written too.

All Board members should be able to promote their organisation through an elevator pitch. Understanding the organisation’s values, constitution and objectives will help with this and other responsibilities.
