Intro to Coffee Skills

Thinking about a job in the café scene? Or exploring career options in the hospitality sector? This introductory course is just what you need to help you gain the basic skills, experience, and confidence to help you get started on the path to being a barista or to pursue further study in the hospitality industry. 

Learn about types of coffee, milk, and beans, how to use, clean and maintain coffee equipment, and food safety and hygiene in a café environment, all while you get practical experience making interesting coffees.

You can join this course if you are:

  • a South Australian resident, or hold a valid work or study visa, and;
  • 18 years or older, and;
  • not enrolled at school or in a Flexible Learning Options program
  • preparing for work or study.

Who is this course for?

This program is not accredited. It is designed for learners who have had limited coffee machine use and who want to gain confidence and experience with the view to working in the sector or further training. It is a requirement of the program to sample coffees you or other learners have made.

Learn in a safe, fun environment whilst improving your computer skills to help you prepare for further work or study.

What will I learn?

Some of the topics included in this course are:

  • Introduction to coffee
  • Food safety in a café environment
  • Learning different coffee types and styles
  • Basic espresso machine use (incl milk texturing)
  • Bean types and milk types
  • Understanding commercial café environments and expectations
  • Quality and speed: the coffee challenge – making 5 coffees in 3 minutes
  • Fun latte art challenge

How will I learn?

This course is provided face-to-face. It may run between 4 to 8 weeks – refer to the individual course details on the registration page.

This course is taught by a Community Learning Trainer who is there to help you in feeling confident. Working alongside them are our Community Learning Mentors who are dedicated to your individual learning journey and can offer one-on-one support if you need it.
